Case Study

We were approached by the National Theatre of China who's cast were about to embark on a large scale tour of China with a production of 'Warhorse' in collaboration with The National Theatre here in the UK. The puppeteers who would operate the famous horses had been selected from a thousand entrants and had been whittled down to a team of 18. The performers came from a variety of performing backgrounds from acrobats to martial artists. The team of performers had already been rehearsing hard under the guidance of their own expert team and the directors from the National Theatre here in the UK. However The National Theatre of China wanted to give the performers a crash course in Physical Theatre and stagecraft. We designed a 5 week course and hand selected our team of 4 of the countries leading practitioners and directors. After several planning meetings here in the UK we headed out to Beijing. The course consisted of several elements including Commedia Dell'Arté, Theatre de Complicité, and Le Coq as well as newly devised methods from performer and practitioner Ed Woodall. These Methods were then implemented into scenes an performed in front of the the Theatre companies directors. We were also able to feed back on the individual performers and suggest areas that needed more work. The trip was a huge success and it was great to be able to work in an amazing country such as China and explore their own theatrical techniques and expertise. We'll be going back!
